Musethica Session at mdw Vienna
From March 5th-12th, 2026, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) hosted a Musethica Session as part of the EU co-funded project 1000+ Concerts: Innovating Higher Music Education through Social Inclusion. For an intense week of concerts, tutor Martin Spangenberg (School of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin) worked with the Vienta Quintet: Ramona Forer (Flute), Iris Enache (Oboe), Emil Stepanek (Clarinet), Simon Aiglstorfer (Horn), and Yue Wang (Bassoon).
Throughout the week, the ensemble performed ten social concerts in a wide range of institutions across Vienna, reaching audiences who rarely experience live classical music. The musicians played for people at a homeless day centre (Das Stern – Austrian Red Cross), supported housing for women affected by homelessness (Haus Tivoligasse, Wiener Hilfswerk), a senior day centre (Caritas Socialis Rennweg), a special education school at Bildungscampus Christine Nöstlinger, a retirement home (Pflege Innerfavoriten), a day centre for people with learning difficulties (Jugend am Werk, Seebogen), and the Forensic-Therapeutic Centre Vienna-Favoriten.
These performances allowed the musicians to refine their chamber music programme while engaging with diverse communities. The repertoire included works by Fazıl Say, Thibault Perrine, Henri Tomasi, Paul Taffanel and Valerie Coleman.
The session concluded with a public concert on March 12th, 2026, at the Fanny Hensel Hall at mdw, sharing the programme developed throughout the week with a wider audience.
