1000+ Concerts in Practice: Musethica joins Podcast on Artistic Citizenship

How can artistic practice in music education be a form of social engagement? In the podcast “Mehr als Töne” (“More Than Sounds”), Musethica’s Managing Director Isabel Aguirre made a guest appearance and offered insights into the practical implementation of Artistic Citizenship. The episode was recorded during a seminar at the Institute of Music Education at the University of Münster (Germany).

Ahead of the seminar, podcast initiator Daniela Bartels, music educator and Professor of Music and Music Didactics at the University of Münster, together with music education students attended selected concerts as part of the 1000+ Concerts’ Musethica Session in Essen, Germany. They were then able to build on this first-hand experience during the seminar with Isabel Aguirre, gaining a deeper understanding of the concept behind Musethica’s educational programme.

The discussion covered not only organisational aspects, such as the highly competitive selection of musicians, but also explores what social impact can look like. Why do artists participating in Musethica Sessions bring classical music to often invisible different places across a city and share it with people there at risk of exclusion? What goals does Musethica pursue, and who do these goals actually “benefit”?

The result was an open and nuanced exchange about social responsibility in classical music and the education of the next generation of musicians.

A big thank you to Daniela Bartels and the Institute for this valuable collaboration.
